The VINNVÄXT programme has been launched by VINNOVA in order to promote sustainable growth and inter-national competitiveness by means of developing internationally-competitive research and innovation environments in specific growth fields.

The main elements of VINNVÄXT are:
• VINNVÄXT takes the form of a competition in which the best submissions win.
There are 12 winners so far, one of which is GöteborgBIO (winner of 2004).

• A limited number of regions will receive up to SEK 10 million per year from VINNOVA,
and regional co-funding by the equivalent amount is required. This adds up to a SEK 120 million initiative.

• The focus lies on creating strong regional centres in specific fields.

• The programme presupposes the active participation of players from the private, public and research sectors and from the political sphere (i.e. the Triple Helix).

• Long-term: funding will be provided for 10 years.

• A number of support activities (seminars, training/education, the exchange of experience, and the extension of knowledge/research).
