Successful biomaterial and cell therapy research
One of the major strategic life science initiatives in the Västra Götaland region is BIOMATCELL (biomaterial and cell therapy); an interdisciplinary research centre which is producing new materials for implants and prostheses that are customised for patients, allowing them to heal more quickly and using stem cell technology and other technologies.
The centre is also developing new methods for evaluation of materials before and after insertion. A unique close partnership between academia, institutes, industry and healthcare and nursing is allowing progress to be made in both basic research and applied research with a view to reinforcing and developing the region's strong position in this field.
BIOMATCELL is made up of a unique combination of participants, covering the entire chain from materials development, preclinical and clinical research to industrial implementation and clinical application. This initiative is a partnership between the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, Uppsala University, the Technical Research Institute of Sweden (SP) and companies operating in the field of life sciences.
BIOMATCELL has received the VINN Excellence Center award from government authority VINNOVA, which means that they intend to finance the project for ten years (ending in 2017), injecting a total of SEK 70 million. The regional development committee has previously granted funding to BIOMATCELL and is now providing the project with a further SEK 6 million.
