Michael Nilsson defended his thesis in 1992 at the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg. At the end of the ‘nineties, he was a visiting researcher at the Centre for Neuroscience, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. Since then, he has built up a widespread research network at several universities in Australia and elsewhere, both at home and abroad. His research focuses on understanding the healing and rehabilitation processes following injuries and illnesses affecting the brain, primarily after strokes. His research background is in animal experiments but in recent years he has started up and runs several translational-based clinical studies.
Owing to his involvement within the framework of the university´s third task, Michael Nilsson has also gathered considerable experience and built up extensive contacts in a variety of networks in society in general. Via lectures and other educational presentations to the general public and to the profession, he has helped spread know-how within his specialist areas.
“I am delighted that Michael is accepting the challenge and is taking on the post of the hospital´s RD&E director. He has the right background and characteristics and is therefore the right person for the new position in the hospital´s executive management. He is also the person best suited to take over from Conny Persson, who is retiring," says hospital director Jan Eriksson.
“It´s very gratifying and stimulating that the RD&E area is being further emphasised in the hospital´s organisation. It will be very enjoyable to tackle this assignment and help strengthen Sahlgrenska University Hospital still further," says Michael Nilsson in a comment.
