OrtomaAB develops concepts for tailored orthopaedic implants
The Göteborg-based medical devices company OrtomaAB has in the past few days closed a fully-subscribed new share issue, which has raised over a million Swedish crones for the company. In addition, the firm has been granted SEK400 000 inconditional loans from Region Västra Götaland and SEK300 000 inverification grants from SahlgrenskaSciencePark. The money is to be used for continued development of a intervertebral disc prosthesis.
Ortoma is developing a concept for the production of intervertebral disc prostheses tailored for each patient. This method will be an attractive alternative to arthrodesis — the most common surgical treatment today for patients with chronic pain in the lumbar region of the back. Every year more than 500 arthrodesis operations are performed in Sweden, and the equivalent figure for the EU is 120 000. However, the procedure entails a number of drawbacks for the patient, and reduced mobility due to the fixing of adjacent vertebrae is a common complication. Ortoma´s method is expected to solve this problem. The concept, which has been prepared in cooperation with researchers at SahlgrenskaUniversityHospital , the UniversityofGothenburgand Stockholm University, can be applied to various parts of the body and covers the whole sequence from collection of patient data to planning and production of implants and performing the operation. The technique is based on the design of high-precision implants, with the aim of reducing surgical intervention and strain on the patient. In addition to the implants, the company´s product portfolio also contains surgical instruments specially developed for Ortoma's technique.
