Large Investments in Research and Development in Västra Götaland
The Regional Development Board has taken decisions on large investments in research and development in Västra Götaland. The largest single investment is in a new research programme for small and medium-sized enterprises, to which SEK 10 million is being allocated. A total of SEK 32 million is being shared out in R&D investments.
The new programme Research and Development in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, which is receiving SEK 10 million, is aimed at improving the opportunities for small and medium-sized companies to compete in global markets, improving knowledge transfer between companies, academia and research institutions and creating new jobs. The programme is owned and run by Region Västra Götaland and contains two types of grants companies can apply for: R&D cheques up to a maximum of SEK 35 000 to be used to clarify companies´ needs for R&D investments, and regional R&D support up to a maximum of SEK 500 000, which is intended to contribute to specific research projects that add new knowledge and expertise to the development of products and processes.Västra Götaland is one of the top regions in Europe in terms of R&D investments in the business community. The investments are, however, dominated by a number of very large companies, while investments in smaller businesses are marginal. Dependence on the research of large companies makes Västra Götaland vulnerable to structural changes. Small and medium-sized companies thus have a decisive role to play in future competitiveness and employment.
