Gothia Forum for Clinical Research now being launched
Pharmaceutical companies and Västra Götaland Region work together on clinical research
The Gothia Forum for Clinical Research is now being launched. It is a new meeting-place for clinical researchers, the result of a unique cooperative approach between Västra Götaland Region, University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology and research-intensive pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD). The aim of this cooperation is to create better conditions for clinical research, generate new jobs in the region and promote better medical care, according to a press release issued by Västra Götaland Region. Gothia Forum is to be a meeting-place that provides support and tools for clinical researchers and delivers information about up-to-the-minute clinical research.

The Gothia Forum for Clinical Research has been created as a distinct unit within Västra Götaland Region. To this unit is attached an Advisory Board that encompasses Västra Götaland Region, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology and the pharmaceutical companies. The first Advisory Board meeting will be held in Göteborg in June. "The aim is to make Västra Götaland Region into the most attractive region in Europe for high-quality research," says Kaj Stenlöf, director of Gothia Forum, in a comment to the press. "Gothia Forum will allow the pharmaceutical companies to conduct clinical studies in a more efficient way so that new medicines and treatment methods become available to patients more quickly. It will make it easier for the companies to conduct clinical research in cooperation with the region´s health services," says Anders Åkerlund, who heads the Swedish section of global clinical research at AstraZeneca.

Three-way cooperation attracted MDS to participate in Gothia Forum
Merck, Sharp & Dohme — MSD — welcomes Region Västra Götaland´s initiative to create the Gothia Forum for Clinical Research. "Västra Götaland Region is the region that has made the most progress in working together with industry on the issue of clinical research. We are very happy to be involved in this cooperative venture. In the longer-term perspective, it helps the industry decide where to conduct clinical tests if there is a partner for discussions in the region. Gothia Forum has excellent preconditions for benefiting both industry and patients," relates Roger Juhlin, chief medical officer at MSD, to Pharma Online.  "Another advantage of Gothia Forum is that there is three-way cooperation between the health service, academia and industry. Everyone can contribute. At the same time, there is a voluntary perspective whereby it is not essential to be involved, and that is an advantage," explains Roger Juhlin. Pharma Online: Does this mean that MSD will conduct its clinical tests in Region Västra Götaland in the future? "We will locate our clinical trials where it is easiest to work together. Reliability and firm schedules are a vital parameter," says Roger Juhlin.
