Uterine transplantations possible in the future
Caption: Mats Brännström, Professor of Gynaecology
Transplantation of the uterus may become a possibility in the future, according to a research team at the University of Gothenburg whose work is at the cutting edge of international research in this area.
“We want women who have been born without a womb, or who have lost their womb through illness, to be able to give birth to their own biological babies," says Mats Brännström, professor of gynaecology.

Mats Brännström equates uterine transplantation with other reproductive medicine such as in vitro fertilisation.  “There are always risks with an operation, but in vitro fertilisation also involves complex medical procedures," explains Mats Brännström.

After ten years of research, the team have made so much progress that the actual surgery functions, although there is still insufficient empiric analysis of post-operation safety.
“We have to first verify that aftercare and medication function properly before taking the step of operations on human beings," says Michael Olausson, professor of surgery.
