Scholarship to rheumatology researcher
Professor Hans Carlsten, award-winning researcher.
Professor Hans Carlsten of Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Göteborg has received the Nanna Svartz scholarship for advances in rheumatology research. The award is for 50,000 kronor.
One main focal point for Hans Carlsten´s research is the way female sex hormones affect the development of the immune system and how they can regulate immunological responses upon activation in connection with autoimmune inflammatory illnesses. He has shown, for instance, that estrogen dampens the inflammatory process in rheumatoid arthritis, hinders the development of joint erosion and even protects against osteoporosis. Ongoing research encompasses studies of the effects of synthetic Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs). The award is presented by The Swedish Rheumatism Association and Pfizer.
