75 million SEK for research schools
The University of Gothenburg, Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University and Umeå University will together share 75 million SEK provided by The Swedish Research Council. The funds will be used for the establishment of five national clinical research schools.
“The research schools will strengthen recruitment to clinical research and complement the research education already offered at the universities. The aim is also that they should stimulate interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches and benefit national and international cooperation," says Håkan Billig, Secretary General of Medicine for The Swedish Research Council.

Two of the research schools will specialise in general clinical research, one at Karolinska Institutet and the other at LinköpingUniversity. The third, which will be at Umeå University, will focus on general practice research while the programmes at the last two — the University of Gothenburg and Karolinska Institutet — will be devoted to psychiatric research.

All told, the research schools will receive 15 million kronor each, distributed over a period of five years. As part of the increased focus on clinical research schools, The Swedish Research Council will announce the establishment of additional research schools for clinical medical research in 2011.
