400 million kronor for biotech research
15 Swedish projects are getting funds for research into antibiotic resistance, biomarkers and model systems, epigenetics and crops. “We are facing immense challenges in the medical sphere," says Lars Rask, President of SSF (the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research), the organisation behind the funding drive.
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, feels that the pharmaceutical industry does not invest sufficiently in fundamental research in the medical sphere. “It is therefore of considerable strategic importance that actors other than the pharmaceutical industry invest resources in fundamental research in these areas," says Lars Rask.Over a period of five years, 15 projects will therefore share a total of 400 million kronor. The lion´s share, totalling 207 million, will go to research in models and biomarkers for the development of new pharmaceuticals.
