Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases

CMR is focused on defining the underlying mechanisms of the metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance and developing strategies to prevent and treat its life-threatening complications.
The metabolic syndrome is characterized by abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and high cholesterol levels. Individuals with this syndrome have a dramatically increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One in four adults is affected by this syndrome; hence, it is the leading public health issue associated with cardiovascular disease - the primary cause of death and disability worldwide.
